He helped established Oregon City and the West. His home is part of the National Parks Service and a great place to mark the centennial.

The National Park Service is celebrating it's 100th anniversary this week - it was signed into existence on August 25th, 1916. For those looking to mark the occasion, you have to go no further than the McLoughlin House in Oregon City.
The former home of John McLoughlin who was the chief factor at Fort Vancouver in the Oregon Country for 20 years - for years before Oregon became a state - it will be the host to tours and celebrations on Saturday.
People will be in period dress representing McLoughlin and members of his family.

As "Chief Factor," McLoughlin was in charge of British fur trade interests from California to Alaska. A trained physician, he became known as the "Doctor."
Forced into retirement, he and his family settled in this home by the Willamette Falls in 1846 and became an American citizen five years later. He also served as mayor of Oregon City.
