Summer Scholars Program Offers Students Head Start To College
Clackamas Community College offers incoming and graduating seniors in Clackamas County a tuition-free chance to get started on college.

OREGON CITY, OR — Clackamas Community College is offering a tuition free program this summer to help incoming and graduating Clackamas County high school seniors get a head start toward earning their four-year college degrees.
CCC's Summer Scholars program gives college-bound students an opportunity to earn college credits and complete their general electives during an eight-week term held over the summer between June 25 and Aug. 17.
From courses on public speaking and various mathematic focuses to a variety of health courses, including First Aid and CPR, participating students can register for up to 10 credits — paying only the course fees and book costs.

"Students who participate in accelerated learning (college credit classes) while in high school are more likely to gradate high school, go to college, and be successful students," CCC Director of Education Partnerships Jaime Clarke told Patch in an email Friday. "Connecting early with college and earning college-credits can greatly impact student success."
By voiding tuition, CCC is also offering a considerable savings compared to taking the same number of credits at a four-year college.

"Something for students to consider if they are headed off to a college in the fall: the Summer Scholars Program is a huge cost savings," Clarke explained. "Students can take core classes, like WR-121, with us this summer at $0 tuition. Or they can wait to take the class in the fall at CCC for $400 tuition or OSU for $880 tuition."
Additionally, registered Summer Scholars students will also get to attend a First Year Experience class at no cost. The overall savings offered to Clackamas County students is well over $1,000, according to CCC officials.
"Investing in themselves this summer can save students in the long run, both time and money," Clarke said.
