Working to Make Madrone Park a Reality

Members of the Oregon National Guard are on site this week building a road and parking lot as the park readies for its opening next year.

It's still months away from becoming a reality, but the Madrone Wall Park this week is getting a little closer to becoming a reality.

This week and next, members of the Oregon National Guard are on site outside of Damascus working on building a road and parking lot for what will be the county's newest park.

"We’re fortunate that the Oregon National Guard has such a program," said Clackamas County Parks Manager Rick Gruen.

"The Guard is excited to work on this unique site and we are excited to take advantage of this opportunity to save money while making our future beautiful park more functional."

The work is being paid for by a National Guard program that provides real-life experience for the guard's engineers.

The 44-acre site is noted the for the 1,000-foot long basalt wall that, at points, reaches 120 feet in the air and has long been popular with rock climbers. The site used to be a quarry.

It is scheduled to open as a park on July 1, 2017
