Clown Threat Rumors Make Their Way to Wilsonville

The West-Linn Wilsonville School District sends a note home to parents.

Early last week, the supposed of threats had made it to the Pacific Northwest resulting in a series of warnings from law enforcement agencies and others saying they are aware of the rumors but - as far as anyone could tell - there was no actual threat.

Law enforcement agencies have worked hard to walk a fine line between making sure no one doubts they take all threats seriously and making sure people understand they have not seen any evidence to take it too seriously.

"Clowns are no laughing matter for some people but, generally speaking, aren’t committing a crime when they are clowning around,"said Portland PoliceSpokesman Sergeant Pete Simpson. "Anytime someone is the victim of a crime, clown or not, we encourage a call to 9-1-1.

"Otherwise, people are probably safe to carry an old fashioned seltzer bottle or a glitter bomb just in case. Now mimes are a different story."

Now, add the West Linn-Wilsonville School District to the list of those sending out warnings.

"A rumor about clowns making threats against students and staff has surfaced in surrounding school districts as well as our own," Superintendent Kathy Ludwig said in an email to students and parents. "This is a social media generated rumor that started in August on the east coast. The rumor is about individuals dressed as clowns coming to local schools to harm students or teachers. This rumor has surfaced across the country, mostly due to people re-posting or sharing previous posts. Our school safety officers, local law enforcement and school administrators are monitoring this issue.

"Let's help one another stay safe. We are a stronger community when we report concerns and support one another. "
