Latest PA Coronavirus Data: 670 New Cases, 7,673 Total Deaths

The Pennsylvania Department of Health on Sunday confirmed 670 additional positive cases of COVID-19 and two new deaths.

HARRISBURG, PA — The Pennsylvania Department of Health on Sunday confirmed 670 additional positive cases of COVID-19, bringing the statewide total to 133,504. Two new deaths were reported Sunday, bringing the statewide total to 7,673.

Since the onset of the pandemic, more than 1.5 million Pennsylvanians have been tested, state officials said Sunday.

Of the patients who have tested positive to date, the age breakdown is:

  • 1 percent ages 0-4
  • Nearly 2 percent are ages 5 to 12
  • Nearly 4 percent are ages 13 to 18
  • 10 percent are ages 19 to 24 
  • Nearly 38 percent are ages 25 to 49 
  • Nearly 23 percent are ages 50 to 64
  • Approximately 23 percent are ages 65 or older

Most of the patients hospitalized are ages 25 to 49, and most of the deaths have occurred in patients 65 or older, state data shows.

Secretary of Health Rachel Levine stressed that the mitigation efforts in place are essential to protect the most vulnerable Pennsylvanians, "including our children as they start school and our loved ones in long-term care facilities.”

She added that cases in schools and in facilities such as nursing homes are typically "a reflection of the spread of the virus in the local community."

State officials said there is a continued increase in the number of COVID-19 cases among younger age groups, particularly 19 to 24-year-olds.

The following regions saw significant increases among 19 to 24-year-olds in each month from April to August:

  • Southeast – Nearly 5 percent of cases in April to nearly 18 percent of cases so far in August
  • Northeast – 6 percent of cases in April to nearly 19 percent of cases so far in August
  • North Central – Approximately 7 percent of cases in April to nearly 17 percent of cases so far in August
  • Southwest – Approximately 5 percent of cases in April to 12 percent of cases so far in August
  • South Central – Approximately 7 percent of cases in April to nearly 13 percent of cases so far in August
  • Northwest– Nearly 7 percent of cases in April to nearly 10 percent of cases so far in August.
