PA Reports 5K+ New COVID Cases, 100+ Hospitalizations In 24 Hours

HARRISBURG, PA — Pennsylvania reported a whopping 5,488 new coronavirus cases on Thursday, shattering a single-day record for the highest increase set just the day before.

The statewide total of cases is now up to 248,856. Of those infected, 71 percent of patients have recovered. Also Thursday, 49 new deaths were reported, bringing the state's total to 9,194 deaths attributed to COVID-19.

Hospitalizations are also up. More than 100 hospitalizations were reported in the state in just 24 hours.

On Wednesday, the state said there were 2,080 people hospitalized in Pennsylvania for the coronavirus. On Thursday, the number of hospitalizations increased to 2,196.

There are now more people on ventilators; the number of patients on ventilators increased from 193 on Wednesday to 207 on Thursday.

The data shows that the fall surge shows no signs of abating.

The single-day record for new cases has been repeatedly broken in recent days, with daily numbers notably higher than they were at the early height of the pandemic back in the spring.

The state's percent positivity rate is up to 6.9 percent from 6.1 percent the week before.
