PA Sees Largest Single-Day Increase In New COVID Cases Friday

PENNSYLVANIA — Pennsylvania on Friday recorded its highest single-day coronavirus case increase since the pandemic began in March.

The state Department of Health reported 2,219 additional positive cases of COVID-19 Friday, bringing the statewide case total to 190,579.

"Daily increases are now comparable with what we saw in April 2020, with today’s case count the largest one-day total," the Department of Health said in a news release.

It was the second day in a row that more than 2,000 new cases were reported in Pennsylvania.

On Thursday, there were 2,063 additional positive cases of COVID-19 reported.

Officials have been warning the fall resurgence of COVID-19 has already arrived.

Five key indicators on the status of the coronavirus pandemic in Pennsylvania are on the rise, data shows. Cases are up, the incidence rate of the virus has increased, and the testing positivity rate is on the rise. Plus, hospitalizations are up and the number of patients on ventilators has also increased.

The average number of people hospitalized for coronavirus over 14 days has reached its highest level since June.

According to state data, over the past two weeks, an average of 847 people per day were hospitalized for the virus. As of Friday, there are now more than 1,000 people hospitalized in Pennsylvania with 122 people on ventilators.
