Volunteerism Is A Way Of Life For Greensburg's Sheila Myers

Young Marines names top volunteer in northeast, Sheila Myers with Westmoreland County Young Marines in Greensburg, Pennsylvania.

For National Volunteer Week – April 18 – 24, the Young Marines honors Sheila Myers of Greensburg, Pennsylvania with the Volunteer of the Year award for Division 1. She is the Unit Commander of the Westmoreland County Young Marines also located in Greensburg. She has been an adult volunteer since 2013 and has volunteered more than 1,000 community service hours.

The Young Marines is a national youth education and service program for boys and girls, age eight through the completion of high school. It promotes the mental, moral, and physical development of its members. The program focuses on character building, leadership, and a healthy, drug-free lifestyle.

Division 1 includes nine states: Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, and Vermont.

“Sheila Myers’ passion and determination really stand out in all she has done for her unit as well as for the organization,” said Col William P. Davis USMC (Ret), national executive director and CEO of the Young Marines. "It is especially meaningful to present this award during April which is National Volunteer Month. Sheila is a wonderful mentor and teacher, reflecting all the best traits of our volunteers.”

Myers shares the credit with all the outstanding adult volunteers with whom she works, and without their support, dedication, and tireless efforts, she believes the program would not be as successful as it is. It gives her great joy to mentor and teach the Young Marines. When youth members show growth in self-esteem, leadership, and the ability to mentor others, she knows the program and the efforts of all the adult volunteers are well worth it.

“As with everything, it takes a village to have a successful unit, regiment and program,” Myers said. “One individual cannot do it all alone. I am blessed to have truly outstanding adult volunteers with whom to work.”
