Do You Know the Snow Removal Laws in Ambler, Whitpain and Lower Gwynedd?

Did you know: No snow emergency routes exist in Ambler, and Lower Gwynedd requires snow removal 10 hours after a snowfall has ended.

Ambler Borough

If you're going to snowblow that driveway and sidewalk, do it before 10 p.m. and after 6 a.m., as Ambler Borough code prohibits use of such domestic power equipment during those other hours.
Snow must be removed from abutting sidewalks to a property by the owner or tenant within 24 hours after a snow event has ended in Ambler. All cleared paths must be 30 inches wide, per borough code. Snow is not allowed to be thrown onto any roadway.
If snow and ice cannot be removed from a sidewalk without damaging it, borough code requires salt or sand be put down to make travel reasonable and safe.
Also, do not put snow next to a fire hydrant or in a public loading and unloading zone.
Anyone violating the snow removal laws in Ambler can be fined between $25 and $3,000, per borough code.
While the borough code includes a section for designated snowmobile roadways, none have been established by borough council, thereby banning the use of snowmobiles in Ambler.
The chief of police, or someone designated by the chief, can declare a snow emergency in Ambler when street conditions are dangerous or hazardous to vehicles and pedestrians. The snow emergency ends 24 hours after the end of accumulation of snow, per borough code. As with other municipalities, any vehicles without snow tires or chains are prohibited on snow emergency routes.
Here's something interesting: No snow emergency routes exist in Ambler Borough.

Whitpain Township

Whitpain Township prohibits parking on all snow emergency routes. Here is the list of snow emergency routes in the township. A snow emergency can be declared by the public works director, chief of police or chairman of the board of supervisors.
Property owners must clear snow from sidewalks abutting their properties within 24 hours after a snowfall has ended in Whitpain, per township code.
It is also illegal in Whitpain for snow or ice to remain on "any walkway used by residents of the apartment or upon any paved surface used for ingress, egress or parking of motor vehicles" 24 hours after a snowfall has ended in the township.
Excessive amounts of snow or ice may be placed in the area between the sidewalk and the curbline, but not in the street, according to township code. Fire hydrants must also be clear of snow and ice.
Violators of the snow laws in Whitpain can be fined up to $600, per the code.
Lower Gwynedd Township
The 24-hours-after-a-snowfall rule doesn't apply in Lower Gwynedd.
According to township code, snow or ice must be removed from sidewalks in front of or alongside a property 10 hours after snow or ice has ceased to fall or form in the township.
However, snow or ice that has ceased to fall or form after 6 p.m. may be removed at any time before 10 a.m. the next day, per township code.
In the declaration of a snow emergency in Lower Gwynedd, or in the event of two or more inches of snow, all vehicles must be moved off the street if the owner of the property has access to a garage, driveway or other off-street parking.
If there is no off-street parking available, then parking is allowed on the street on a snow emergency route. However, it must be on one side of the street, the one with odd-numbered residences, per township code. Snow cannot be thrown onto the street during a snow event.
