New Candy Shop Opening Up In Ambler This Week

AMBLER, PA — While coronavirus and the resulting economic downturn have hit local small businesses hard, area entrepreneurs are proving there is always a light amid the darkness.

A new candy shop, Sweet Annie's, is opening up in downtown Ambler on Wednesday, July 22.

“Candy is something that makes you smile and lifts your spirit, even if only for a little while… something we could certainly all use right now," local resident and owner Annie Maloney said.

The store will specialize in a variety of candies, chocolates, and sw eet confections, Maloney said.

There will also be products from local small businesses, craft candy makers from around the country, gifts and gift baskets for any special occasion, and more.

Maloney, a mother of four young children, opened up the shop as a way to return to work after staying home for the past few years, she said. It's also a return to her family roots. Maloney's great aunt Margaret was a famous bootlegger in south Philadelphia through the 1920s. When Prohibition ended, she opened up a popular candy shop 22nd and Mifflin, which she ran for 25 years, according to Maloney.

Maloney began working on the store — at the suggestion of her son Liam — before the pandemic began. But she hasn't let that deter her plans.

The new store is located on 81 E. Butler Avenue. Hours are 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., Wednesday and Thursday, 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Friday, 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday, and noon to 4 p.m. Sunday.
