Remembering The Upper Gwynedd Man Who Won Four Bronze Stars

The local man who passed on two years ago remains a hero for his actions long ago in the South Pacific.

Salvatore N. Yacovelli of Upper Gwynedd, Pa. passed away Saturday, Jan. 4, 2014 at Gwynedd Square Nursing Home of Gwynedd Valley, Pa. He was 97.

Born in Manayunk, Pa. on Sept. 13, 1916 and formerly of Conshohocken, Pa., Sal has been staying at Gwynedd Square Center for the last 4 years, where he received loving and wonderful care. He was a member of SS. Cosmas & Damian RC Church of Conshohocken, Pa. He served as a Sgt. in the US Army – Air Force in the South Pacific during World War II.

He was part of the Central Pacific Air Offensive-Japan Eastern Mandates, Western Pacific, earning a good conduct medal, American Defense Service Medal and the Asiatic Pacific Services Medal with 4 Bronze Stars.
He worked as a Wire Braider with Walker Brothers and as a Mold Changer with Lee Tire & Goodyear for a combined total of over 35 years.

Sal was a devoted family man, centering his life around his entire family, especially his grandchildren.
He is survived by his wife, Angela “Julie” (Romano) Yacovelli of Upper Gwynedd, Pa.; two sons, Robert J. Yacovelli (Janet) of Harleysville, Pa. and Richard A. Yacovelli of Upper Gwynedd, Pa.; a brother, Nicholas Yacovelli of Bridgeport, Pa.; two sisters, Philomenia “Minnie” Kurcik of Bridgeport, Pa. and Concetta “Connie” Lanutti of Norristown, Pa.; brothers- and sisters-in-law Jack and Rita Romano of Conshohocken, Pa.; Anne Romano of Plymouth Meeting, Pa.; Rita and Frank Forlano of Plymouth Meeting, Pa.; Mary (Late Micky) Gualtieri of Lansdale, Pa.; Jim (Late Teresa) Murphy of West Norriton, Pa.; and he was a beloved Pop–Pop to his three grandchildren Michael, Steven and Jennifer. Also survived by many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Anthony Yacovelli and Philomenia (Manzi) Yacovelli; two brothers, John Yacovelli and Gus Yacovelli; sister Viola (Yacovelli) Priest; brother- and sister-in-law, Joseph and Rose Romano; and brother- and sister-in-law Nick and Delma Romano.
His funeral mass was held on Wednesday, Jan. 8, 2014 at 10 a.m. from the SS. Cosmas & Damian RC Church, 209 West Fifth Ave & Maple St., Conshohocken PA.

Interment was at St. Patrick’s Cemetery, East Norriton, Pa.
