The Race To 100 Rain Gardens

Ambler residents can learn to create their own rain garden, with incentives from the borough.

The Borough of Ambler hopes to have 100 more rain gardens in the next 10 years. The Ambler Environmental Advisory Council (EAC) hopes to help the borough reach that goal.

The first thing's first. What's a rain garden? The topic will be a focus of discussion on March 23. The public is invited to attend a workshop to learn the detailed answer to that very question.

As posted in the Ambler Patch events calendar, the workshop on Rain Gardens is scheduled for Saturday, March 23. From 9 to 11 a.m., Ambler residents can head to the Upper Dublin Township Building, 801 Loch Alsh Ave. in Fort Washington.

The rain garden instruction will be delivered by Master Gardener Presenters Thomas McGeehan and Leslie Bass. Those interested in taking the workshop are asked to pre-register by March 18 by emailing AmblerEAC@gmail.com or by calling 267-322-1521.

"Space is limited," said the EAC listing. "Light refreshments will be served."

The cost is $20 per person, or $25 per couple, which can be paid at the door.

Why build the rain garden?

"Ambler EAC is working with homeowners in the Ambler Borough to keep stormwater from entering our local streams by creating rain gardens," said the EAC flyer for the event. "We invite Ambler Borough homeowners, as well as our neighbors in surrounding townships, to attend this workshop where participants will learn how to design, build and maintain a rain garden on their property."

Those in Ambler are encouraged by the municipality to attend.

"We will share a variety of incentives available exclusively to Ambler Borough residents," said the EAC site.
