Wissahickon SD Gets $59K For Special Needs Support

AMBLER, PA — Wissahickon School District has received funding from the state to expand services for students with special needs amid the coronavirus pandemic.

The school district was awarded $59,610 in funding, state officials announced this week.

A total of 678 districts and education agencies around the state will receive some of $20 million in grant money.

The money, which comes from the governor's Emergency Education Relief Fund and the Pennsylvania Department of Education's federal funding, is especially important in the wake of the educational struggles faced by districts as they move to partially or fully virtual instruction this fall.

The additional funding will be used to provide enhanced real-time instruction and services and support to students with special needs, who experienced a loss in skills and behavior or experienced a lack of progress because of mandatory school closures.

An additional $5 million has been earmarked for preschool early intervention programs.

The Coronavirus Aid, Relief and Economic Security Act authorizes governors to determine the educational use of Governor's Emergency Education Relief Funds, which can be used towards school reopening plans.
