50 Lower Merion Restaurants Awarded $10K Grants

LOWER MERION TOWNSHIP, PA — Dozens of restaurants in Lower Merion Township have been awarded grant funding to help them get through the coronavirus pandemic.

More than 600 restaurants countywide have now received some $6 million total in funding.

Of those several hundred, 50 are in Lower Merion. Each received $10,000 through the program.

"This grant program, like all of our grant programs to-date, is just one part of what we can all do to support small businesses and their workers," said Montgomery County Commerce Department Director David Zellers. "Let's all stay vigilant, shop local, and mask up so we can get to better days ahead."

Winning recipients came from 56 different municipalities. Efforts were made to target historically disenfranchised groups with these funds, and officials said that 33 percent of restaurants are minority-owned, 33-percent are women-owned, and 4 percent are veteran-owned.

The program has originally put aside $5 million for support, and that number was boosted to $6 million.

Another program benefitting local restaurants, the MontcoStrong 2021 Pennsylvania Hospitality Industry Recovery Program, will launch in the coming weeks. The county is seeking $9.4 million from the state to continue to offer similar awards; a determination on funding will be made by Feb. 28.
