NARBERTH, PA — Some industries have been hit harder than others amid the coronavirus pandemic and health regulations that prevent normal business operations.

Among those industries is the cinema. And a more than 90-year-old theater on the Main Line is feeling the pressure.

The Narberth Theater, located at 129 N. Narberth Ave. in Narberth, is struggling amid the pandemic.

Operator Greg Wax said the 93-year-old theater reopened on Aug. 31 after closing on March 12. But it's only permitted to allow 25 percent of its total capacity inside. And recently, capacities were reduced even further to 10 percent.

"With this sort of restriction in place, along with the dangers of COVID-19, business has cratered," Wax wrote on a GoFundMe campaign he launched to support the theater. "The effect has been catastrophic and we are left scrambling to stay open."

The campaign said utility bills, rent, payroll, and other expenses are piling up, putting the theater in a dire position.

"With no government support looking likely and no clear end in sight to the pandemic, we ask that you please help us keep the projectors lit," Wax wrote.

So far, community members have raised $18,500 of the $100,000 goal as of 2 p.m. Thursday.
