It's time to get your closets and laundry room in shape!

Here are some helpful tips to make sorting thru closets, changing out winter duds, and doing springtime laundry a lot easier for you.

Getting your spring wardrobe ready -- whether that means a trip to the mall, getting clothes out of storage, or doing lots of seasonal laundry -- here are a few spring closet organization tips to get you started.

1. Don't try to do everything at once

Trying to do all your spring closet organization in one day can be overwhelming. You may even end up making things worse if you just put things back haphazardly. "My suggestion is to divide and conquer", says one professional organizer in a recent Readers' Digest article. "On a Saturday morning do your shoes, at other times do your slacks. People have told me that breaking it up into small projects has changed their life."

2. The "Grand Dump"
This pointer from Elle magazine contradicts the first tip, but it might be useful for anyone who wants to get a bird's eye view of their entire wardrobe. If you have enough floor space in your bedroom, empty your closets and dressers. "With this all-encompassing view, you'll be able to immediately see how much stuff you have, which is a rare moment of self-reflection that few
of us are brave enough to afford ourselves," Elle says.

In that moment, ask yourself "Will I wear this?" If you're hesitating, it may be time for that item to go.

3. Clothes for all Seasons
Once you have all your clothes laid out, set aside some cold/cool weather items that might come in handy during the next few months. Having a jacket and a few sweaters will help on those April days that feel more like March.

4. Remember the "One Year Rule"

Another tip from Elle magazine: if you haven't worn something in more than a year, what makes you think it's going to suddenly become part of your spring wardrobe? There might be some exceptions – a dress you only wear to black-tie events – but otherwise, if you have clothing you haven't worn in over a year, it's time for it to go.

5. Keep Like Items Together

Here's a time-saving tip for your spring closet organization project: group like items with like items. Shirts with shirts, slacks with slacks, etc. As one organizer tells Readers Digest, you can even organize by season, sleeve length, or keep everything on color-coded hangers.

6. Tidy the Top Shelf
Stacking clothes on the top shelf seems like a good idea, but those stacks can easily become
unruly piles after a few days. A divider system installed on the top shelf can keep clothing stacks from toppling.

7. What to Get Rid of and What to Keep

Set aside three boxes, labeled "Sell," "Donate" and "Discard." As Elle points out, it's easier to get rid of clothing if you know that you'll get some money for your trouble, you'll be helping someone in need, or your clothes are no longer wearable. If it's the third option, don't just send your clothes to the landfill. Find a recycling service that takes in clothing.
