April 3, 2021 – April 4-10, 2021 is National Library Week, a time to highlight the essential role libraries, librarians and library workers play in transforming lives and strengthening communities. The theme for this year’s National Library Week is “Welcome to your library,” which promotes the idea that libraries extend far beyond the four walls of a building and that everyone is welcome to use their services. Whether people visit virtually or in person, libraries are accessible and inclusive places that foster a sense of belonging and community through learning, discovery and exploration.
The Lower Merion Library System (LMLS) is happy to welcome back patrons – for limited browsing and in-person services. (Hours vary by library – please check the website for the latest hours.) During this time, we will also continue to offer contactless book pick-up through no-fee advanced reservations. The six LMLS libraries (Ardmore, Bala Cynwyd, Belmont Hills, Gladwyne, Ludington, and Penn Wynne) also offer a wide array of online resources that are available from the comfort of home, including books, audiobooks, and magazines, movies for download and streaming, financial and consumer reference services, and more. We encourage all community members to explore and access the many virtual programs offered by their local libraries. As always, these programs and resources are available to you at no cost thanks to the generous support of Lower Merion Township, and the many volunteers and library board members who raise funds to support programs and the purchase of annual books and materials.

During these challenging times, Lower Merion libraries have gone above and beyond to adapt to our changing world by expanding and creating new resources to meet the needs of our patrons. Some of these unique services include the Book Concierge Service – a “grab-bag” of librarian-selected books based on patron interest, and special programs and homework help for kids, and mobile hotspot loans, to name a few.
First sponsored in 1958, National Library Week is a national observance sponsored by the American Library Association and libraries of all types across the country each April. This National Library Week, the Lower Merion library users can show their appreciation and support for libraries by visiting your library’s website, following them on social media and using the hashtag #NationalLibraryWeek. You can also give a shout-out to your favorite librarian on National Library Workers Day, April 6, and join with other patrons by making a special tax –deductible donation to support your Lower Merion Library on Library Giving Day, April 7, 2021.
