Lower Merion School District: Alexander Yung Records Top-Ten Finish At International Business Competition

More than 20,000 people from 22 countries recently gathered virtually for the DECA Emerging Business Leaders & Entrepreneurs International Career Development Conference where Harriton High School senior Alexander Yung finished in the top-ten globally in the Entrepreneurship Category.

DECA's stated mission is to help prepare emerging leaders and entrepreneurs in marketing, finance, hospitality and management in high schools and colleges around the world. Students compete in a range of competitive business-related events, including Entrepreneurship, Sports & Entertainment Marketing, Business Law & Ethics, Travel & Tourism, Buying & Merchandising, Marketing Management and Financial Services, among others.
Students who advanced to the international event were tasked with completing a challenging timed 100-question business exam as well as recording a "role play" relative to their respective event. Unlike in the previous rounds, Yung and other international finalists also had to do a live "role play" with a DECA judge - who was also an industry professional - via Zoom where students would have to answer questions about their specific career cluster and explain how they would handle a particular situation relative to their chosen field.

Yung, who founded Harriton's DECA club two years ago with guidance and support from long-time Business & Information Technology teacher Rhonda Keefer, will attend the University of Pennsylvania's Wharton School of Business next fall where he plans to focus on social entrepreneurship.
"It has been a pleasure to start and grow Harriton's DECA program with Alexander over the last two years," said Keefer, who will be retiring at the end of the school year. "I am super proud of him for his performance at the International Competition and the leadership he has shown with DECA. It truly was a great experience for all."
