“Rock in the Red Zone” is Coming to Merion Station

Film, Discussion and Musical Performance

Adath Israel is featuring the critically acclaimed documentary, “Rock in the Red Zone,” on Saturday, November 18, 2017 at 7:00 pm. The screening is one of the kick-off events for the commemoration of Israel’s 70th anniversary and is being co-sponsored by the Jewish Federation of Greater Philadelphia and the City Avenue Hilton. “Rock in the Red Zone” is a tale of music and romance on the frontline of a never-ending war.

On the edge of Israel’s Negev Desert lies Sderot, a city of factory workers and rock musicians who trace their roots to Tunisia, Morocco and North Africa. Despite being pummeled for years by Hamas’ Qassam rockets, the residents of Sderot have persevered. In raucous Moroccan celebrations they embrace newcomers. During family dinners they voice their dreams, and in the underground bomb shelters they create music. Through the injection of Middle Eastern influences into western rock, the musicians of Sderot have transformed Israeli music. Searching for a story about how the people of Sderot have endured living in a war zone, director, Laura Bialis, encountered a creative community that was personally life-changing. The film features the people and musicians of Sderot.

Distributor, Richard Abramowitz, states,”Laura Bialis’ film, ‘Rock in the Red Zone,’ is a music story that turns into a war story that turns into a love story. It’s a brave and timely work that will resonate across boundaries and borders around the world.”
