VIDEO: Talent Shines within New Horizons Senior Glee Club
Musical group brings together talented senior performers from across the region

Each Tuesday, members of the New Horizons Senior Glee Club, a musical ensemble affiliated with the New Horizons Senior Center, come together in Narberth to discuss, perform and celebrate music.
According to a Glee Club leaflet provided by club member Anita Beckett, the group performs “the songs of Gershwin, Rodgers, Kern and Cole Porter… …the harmonies of Bernstein, Sondheim, Bacharach… …The songs have a way of changing meanings as we grow older. They speak of hope and dreams; memories, joy, beginnings, struggle, peace, endings…”

The all-volunteer club consists of 40 members-musicians, singers and dancers-from the Delaware Valley area that range in age from 55-90. Each year they perform approximately 30 shows throughout the region, often for audiences in locations such as senior centers, schools and places of worship. The club has also played the Kimmel Center, the Capitol Rotunda in Harrisburg, St. Joseph’s University and other well-known venues. The club has also received awards, including a commendation in 2004-05 from then PA Governor Ed Rendell.

The group’s Tuesday meetings are held at its temporary home on the second floor of the Narberth Municipal Building/Fire Department. For two hours, 10 a.m. – noon, they practice and plan for their performances.
Upon meeting Glee Club director Selma Savitz, she informed Patch that today’s turnout would be comparatively small, as the group is winding down for 2013, yet it was a delight to catch even a glimpse of the many talents the group members offer.
