Bethlehem Man Assaults Man Who Refused to Give Him Cigarettes, Cash

The suspect allegedly used a broom and a brick after a failed attempt at stabbing the man.

Shawn Williams of Bethlehem began wielding a broom and a brick against a man who refused his request for money and a cigarette after he unsuccessfully tried to stab him, police said.

The 18-year-old approached Jomar Ramos near Williams’ East Broad Street apartment Monday and asked him for cash and a cigarettes. When Ramos said he had neither, Williams went into the apartment and returned with a kitchen knife and attempted to stab him in the upper body, police said.

When Ramos fought off the attack, Williams went back into his apartment, returned with a broom and hit Ramos with the handle. He then hit Ramos’ back with a brick.

Ramos chased Williams away after he was assaulted, according to court papers. He received treatment at Lehigh Valley Hospital-Muhlenberg.

Williams has been charged with aggravated assault, simple assault and harassment. He was sent to Northampton County Prison in lieu of $10,000 bail.
