As visitor restrictions lift across many retirement communities in Pennsylvania, older adults living at home are still feeling the emotional ramifications caused by the pandemic.

Isolation and feelings of loneliness are a huge concern among seniors, noted Marisa Leaser, director of resident life and case management at Traditions of Hanover.

Over the last several months, many seniors who have chosen to remain in their homes have lost vital social interaction opportunities that can have lasting effects on their health.

It is one reason the independent living community and members from its writers' group have come together. The pen pal initiative began in mid-June with hopes that their outreach efforts will make a difference.

"We hope the pen pal project is a source of comfort for our local seniors, but also to let them know that we are here for them, whether that means a new living option or as a community resource," said Leaser.

The group has written several letters sharing uplifting messages and personal experiences of being a resident at Traditions of Hanover, especially during this unique time.

"I've been lucky through all of this because I have everything I need right at my fingertips, other's haven't been as fortunate," said resident and writer group member Marge Kovacs.
