Residents Craft Jewelry for a Cause

On the second and fourth Tuesday of the month, six residents at Traditions of Hanover bond over beads. The Bead Buddies, which started about eight years ago, fashion new and repurposed beaded jewelry by hand, then sell it at the independent living community in Bethlehem.
The funds from jewelry purchases are donated to the Alzheimer's Association. This year, over $1100 was collected in support of Alzheimer's care and research.
"The Alzheimer's Association is the group's charity of choice. Our funds always go to this organization, and for six consecutive years, we've cleared a $1000," noted Bead Buddies member, Pauline Beck.

But, this group is more than collaborating for a cause. The task of threading beads has become a respite for members of the group and another opportunity to socialize.
"I love doing this. I can't wait for Tuesdays to come around," said Beck. "Working on my jewelry projects gives me time to think about others and not dwell on my issues."

The Bead Buddies create their jewelry with older adults in mind. Many pieces stretch to fit over the head, so there's no fumbling with a clasp. The group also creates napkin holders, which fasten around the neck to the napkin to protect clothing from meal mishaps.
"The napkin holders are purposeful, yet elegant," noted Beck.
The group also creates earrings and bracelets in various sizes to fit adults and children. Men can also find jewelry with a masculine appeal. Bracelets are crafted using dark hues and wooden beads.
The Bead Buddies are also open to custom orders; however, the group suggests coming to a meeting. Since there are plenty of beads to choose from, you'll be able to select desired colors and patterns. And, all orders are backed by the Bead Buddies guarantee.
"If anything breaks, bring it back to Traditions, and we'll fix it for free," said Beck.
