The Canon-McMillan High School boys varsity team dropped its second consecutive game Friday night as the visiting University High Scholl Hawks from Morgantown, W.V. bested the Big Macs by a final score of 13-1.
On a very blustery early spring evening the Hawks transformed a very tight defensive struggle into an embarrassing defeat for the Big Macs. It truly was a tale of two halves. The Hawks scored while being shorthanded as a result of slashing penalty called with 8:37 remaining in the first quarter. They added
to their lead late in the second quarter scoring an even-strengthened goal with 2:39 left in the first half giving the shivering crowd a heightened anticipation for the second half.
Unfortunately, for the Big Mac faithful, the final 24 minutes turned into a nightmare when University scored the next seven consecutive goals in a matter of seven minutes, putting the game on ice. Isaac Miles stopped the bleeding, temporarily, scoring with only five seconds left in the third quarter.
University piled it on when they scored within the first fifty seconds of the final stanza and added then netted the final three goals, completing the rout.
The Big Macs managed only 12 shots of the entire game with only half of those on goal. In addition, Canon-Mac hurt themselves with 10 penalties and the Hawks taking advantage by scoring on half of those man-up opportunities.
Canon-McMillan finishes their four game home stand by facing the Trinity Hillers at Big Mac Stadium tonight.
