The boys varsity team won 11-6.

By Gary Beam

In WPIAL Lacrosse action Monday night, Canon-McMillan defeated the Knights from Norwin at Big Mac Stadium by the score of 11-6. In an extremely physical game that amassed a combined 17 extra man opportunities, the goals netted by the Big Macs came, while the teams were both at full strength, ultimately determined the final outcome.

Canon-Mac caught the Knights flat-footed from the start and before Norwin collected its composure, the Big Macs build up a 5-0 first quarter lead.

Two goals by Nick Carr and a goal each from Richie Leeds, Josh Minor and Evan Crompton began the onslaught. For the second consecutive game Crompton dominated the face-off circle winning all six first quarter scrums which kept Canon-Mac in the Knights defensive zone for most of the quarter.

Crompton’s second goal, an extra man opportunity, kept up the heat in the second quarter and when Isaac Miles scored his first of three goals of the evening, the Big Macs went into the half-time break with a commanding 7-0 lead.

However, Norwin stepped up its game in the third quarter and, taking advantage of some Big Mac penalties, closed the deficit with three extra man and one even-strength tallies giving them much-needed momentum. But two goals by Miles and a score by Leeds regained control for the Big Macs, taking a 10-4 lead into the fourth quarter, a lead which was never again at jeopardy.
Zach Moore added a score late as Canon-Mac held on after the Knights scored two late man-up goals to finish up the night’s scoring.

Canon-McMillan takes to the road for the rest of the week when they take on Winchester Thurston today—Wednesday— and Taylor Allderdice on Friday. The game against Winchester Thurston is the first conference game of the season.
