Canon-McMillan Senior Named one of Top 50 Outstanding Young Citizens in Region

He now has a one-in-50 chance in winning a $5,000 scholarship.

A Canon-McMillan High School senior has been named one of the top 50 Outstanding Young Citizens in our region by Trib Total Media.

Congratulations to Jared Barton, who was named one of the "best, brightest and the most giving" young people in Western Pennsylvania.

According to a story in the Tribune Review Sunday, 252 students from 33 school districts were nominated for the distinction.

"The dedication of these students to academics, leadership, community service and extra-curricular activities is remarkable," the Trib's President and Chief Executive Officer Ralph Martin wrote in Sunday's edition of the paper.

Barton will attend a banquet with the other honorees this Thursday, when he could be be named as one of 10 Gold Honor recipients. He also has a chance to win a $5,000 scholarship from the Tribune Review.

Jared Barton, of North Strabane Township, is the son of Dave and Christine Barton. A member of the National Honor Society, he plans to attend Syracuse University in the fall.
