Canonsburg Council Takes No Action on Borough Manager Position
Solicitor Pat Derrico said no action could be taken because proper public notice was not given.

Canonsburg Council was slated to meet Monday night to discuss and possibly take action on hiring a new borough manager.
But minutes after council came to order, President John Bevec announced that no formal action would be taken.
Solicitor Pat Derrico confirmed that no votes could be taken because the borough did not give proper public notice of the meeting.
Under the state's Sunshine Law, the borough is required to give public notice within 24 hours of public meetings—something the assistant borough manager said was not done.
“An agency shall give public notice of each special meeting or each rescheduled regular or special meeting at least 24 hours in advance of the time of the convening of the meeting specified in the notice,” the Sunshine Law reads.

No public notice appeared in the Observer-Reporter newspaper about the meeting.
“Someone dropped the ball I guess,” Derrico had said earlier Monday when asked by Canon-McMillan Patch about the legality of the meeting.

Council instead adjourned into executive session to discuss the personnel matter.
It was not immediately clear when action would be taken on the borough manager position, which has been vacant since Terry Hazlett retired last month.
