Free Shredding Event Presented to Help Prevent Identity Theft

Have a bunch of paperwork to get rid of but afraid to toss it out in the garbage?
A state legislator can help you with that.
State Rep. Brandon Neuman, D-North Strabane, is sponsoring a free shredding event for the community to destroy unneeded confidential documents.

The event will be held from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday, May 11, at the office parking lot at 1825 Washington Road, Washington, PA 15301.
"Identity theft is a serious, expensive crime as millions of Americans have their personal information stolen every year," Neuman said. "This is a great opportunity for residents to dispose old paperwork safely so thieves cannot get their hands on the information."

Residents may bring all unneeded documents that contain personal information, including Social Security numbers, credit card numbers and bank account numbers, such as:
- Credit card statements
- Credit card applications
- Bank statements
- Canceled checks
- Income tax information
- Insurance records/information, including medical information
- Retirement/pension fund information
Neuman emphasized that no taxpayer money is being used for the event.Â
