Gardening Tips for Green Thumbs

The Scott Conservancy wants to teach amateur green thumbs how to grow their own vegetables in a backyard garden.

The hour-long gardening seminar will be held March 22 at 7 p.m. at the nearby Scott Park Lodge. Admission is $5 at the door and organizers are asking that people contact the Conservancy via e-mail at scottconservepa@yahoo.com or by calling 412-788-1361 so they know how many people will be attending.

Jane Peart, chairperson of the conservancy’s community education program, said the presentation will offer both easy and intricate ways to grow healthy and fresh food in your garden.

“Growing your own food is one of the most satisfying forms of gardening,” Peart wrote in a press release. “In today’s economy, many are now turning to their backyard vegetable plots to help lessen high grocery bills.”

The “Vegetable Gardening +” event is in partnership with the Penn State Cooperative Extension master gardeners.

This class will cover the basics of planning your vegetable garden, preparing the

soil, selecting seeds, tending to the plants and how to harvest them once they’ve matured. There will also be information about organic gardening and edible landscaping.
