North Strabane Firefighter, Son, Injured in Crash While Responding to Blaze

A North Strabane Township volunteer firefighter was injured in a vehicle crash on state Route 19 and Weavertown Road while on route to the scene of a house fire Thursday.

The accident involved two vehicles—one of which was a North Strabane Fire Department squad car.

The Fire Department vehicle was a 2009 Dodge Charger and was driven by Gary Zimak Jr., 37, of North Strabane.

Zimak was transported to Allegheny General Hospital for treatment of injuries suffered as a result of the crash.

As of 4:34 p.m, a hospital spokeswoman said Zimak was no longer a patient there.

Additionally, Zimak’s 5-year-old son, who was in a booster seat located in the rear on the passenger side, was treated at the scene for minor injuries.

The second vehicle that was involved in the crash was operated by Jill Fountaine, 42, of Venetia. Fountaine was driving a 2011 Honda Pilot and was traveling east on Weavertown Road.

Police said she suffered a minor injury and was treated at the scene.

Both vehicles were towed from the scene by Tharp’s Towing.
