Pittsburgh Man Charged With Theft, Forgery, to Stand Trial

A Pittsburgh man accused by Cecil Township police of cashing fraudulent checks from two local businesses waived his right to a preliminary hearing on Thursday.

Police charged Joseph Thomas Hoffman, 32, of 223 Graham St., Pittsburgh, with theft by deception, forgery for reportedly cashing two forged checks drawn from the bank account of Southpointe Two Lot 12 LP.

Officials there told police that two checks each worth $2,671.07 were fraudulently cashed at a local bank. There were noticeable discrepancies on the checks, the criminal complaint indicates.

Cecil Township police have also charged Hoffman with two counts each of theft by deception and forgery for allegedly cashing checks drawn from the account of Allegheny Millwork in Lawrence.

Police said a search of Hoffman's criminal history revealed that he had been arrested twice in Allegheny County for forgery and writing bad checks.
