PJ’s Deli Gives Free Meals to Victims of Severe Flooding

Owner Pam Wheat has been passing out free meals in the Baldwin Street/McLaughlin Run area since Thursday. On Tuesday and Wednesday, flooding victims can eat for free at the deli.

Pam Wheat’s prayers were answered when flood waters from McLaughlin Run stopped within two feet of her business, PJ’s Deli on Bower Hill Road, during the July 10 storms.

Now she’s on a mission to help neighbors who weren’t so lucky.

On Tuesday, July 16 and Wednesday, July 17, flood victims from Baldwin Street, McLaughlin Run Road and the surrounding area—those hardest hit by flooding in Bridgeville—can eat for free at PJ’s Deli between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m.

“We want them to know they can come here to get away from the clean up, and get into the air conditioning, at least for a little bit,” Wheat said. “They’re our neighbors. A lot of people down there have been our customers.”

Tuesday’s lunch special is pasta with meatballs and garlic bread for $6—free to victims of severe recent flooding. Specials are posted on the PJ’s Deli, Catering and Bakery Facebook page.

Wheat and her employees also have been taking van loads of food down into the Baldwin Street area since Thursday and passing it out for free to people who need help.

“We’ve just been stopping down there and yelling ‘Who needs food?’” Wheat said. “We’re almost passing it out faster than we can make it. They need it. A lot of people lost a lot. They had refrigerators in their basements that were just destroyed and food isn’t safe to eat.”

Wheat said victims of severe flooding can come to PJ’s Deli for food if they need it. The deli will be serving meals—free to severe flooding victims—Tuesday and Wednesday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
