The Neustadt's "Tiffany Glass: Painting with Color and Light" Exhibit Opens at Lafayette College

Exhibit Celebrates Tiffany's Connection with Lafayette

The Neustadt Collection’s Tiffany Glass: Painting with Color and Light exhibit will be on display at Lafayette College. The exhibit features five windows, 14 lamps, and 75 pieces of opalescent flat glass and glass “jewels” that illustrate the rich expanse of color and light available to the artists at the Tiffany Studio, which was founded by Louis C. Tiffany (1848-1933).

As a painter, Tiffany was captivated by the interplay of light and color, and this fascination found its most spectacular expression in his glass “paintings.” Using new and innovative techniques and materials, the Tiffany Studios created leaded-glass windows and lampshades in vibrant colors and richly varied patterns, textures, and opacities. Organized by The Neustadt Collection of Tiffany Glass in New York City, Tiffany Glass: Painting with Color and Light features some of the most iconic and celebrated of Tiffany’s works.

The Neustadt’s exhibit at Lafayette has special significance since Lafayette College and Louis C. Tiffany’s histories are intertwined. Tiffany’s second wife, Louise Wakeman Knox, was the daughter of Lafayette President James Hall Mason Knox. As a result of the relationship, the college is home to two superb Tiffany windows, which is a focal point of the exhibit and celebration.

The Neustadt is a nonprofit founded by Dr. Egon Neustadt, an early Tiffany collector who amassed the largest and most important collection of Tiffany lamps ever assembled. Today, The Neustadt is committed to sharing this story and its collections through its gallery at the Queens Museum in New York City and exhibitions that travel to museums nationwide.

The exhibit runs March 4-June 4, 2016 and is open weekdays 11:00am-6pm and weekends 12:00-5pm. Located at Lafayette College’s Williams Art Center, the exhibit is free and open to the public.
