Proposed Overhaul of Pittsburgh Parking Rates, Enforcement

Legislation proposed would provide for a "dynamic parking" system in Pittsburgh.

The Pittsburgh City Council is currently considering revamping the current parking system in the city under legislation proposed on Tuesday.

The legislation introduced would implement a “dynamic parking” system for metered street spaces at the request of Mayor Bill Peduto’s office, in hopes it will plug a $4 million budget hole in 2015, according to TribLive.com. A dynamic parking system would mean that the parking rates would change depending upon demand.

Neighborhoods being targeted include Oakland, Shadyside, Strip District, North Side, South Side, Squirrel Hill, Uptown Brookline, Mt. Washington, Bloomfield, Garfield and East Libery, Trib Live reports. Parking rates in these neighborhoods can vary greatly; from $1 per hour in East Liberty to $3 per hour Downtown, according to Trib Live.
