Historic Schoolhouse Needs Painting, Council Told

The Lutz-Franklin Schoolhouse's wooden trim, cupola and windows are in need of some TLC, Lower Saucon Township Council recently learned.

The wooden cupola, trim and windows at the historic one-room Lutz-Franklin Schoolhouse are in need of paint, Lower Saucon Township Manager Jack Cahalan told township council recently.

"Primarily it’s the wood components (that need paint)," Cahalan said.

The building's iconic cupola also "seems to be sagging a little," he added.

Cahalan told council he would solicit bids for the renovations and present council with a proposal for final approval at its next meeting, which will be held Aug. 21.

The Lutz-Franklin School was built in 1880 and was one of a number of one-room schoolhouses that served the rural population of Lower Saucon Township in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

The stone building was completely restored nearly a decade ago, and now houses a museum maintained by the Lower Saucon Township Historical Society.
