Lansdale Parks and Recreation Gets Dirty with Gardening Workshops

Master gardeners from the Montgomery County Penn State Cooperative Extension help teach the class. The next session is Thursday night on composting.

The Lansdale Parks and Recreation Department will host two upcoming gardening workshops as taught by master gardeners of the Montgomery County Penn State Cooperative Extension.

“We offer the program because we know there is an interest in backyard gardening and gardening in general,” said Carl Saldutti, Lansdale parks and recreation director, in an e-mail. “This is an excellent community and outreach program.”

According to Saldutti, the free gardening workshops have been offered for more than two years, in conjunction with the Penn State Cooperative’s Master Gardener Speakers Bureau Program.

“We are fortunate to have such a valuable resource available to us,” Saldutti said. “It is quality programming and the program coordinator, Linda Antonacio-Hoade, is a joy to work with.”

Saldutti said that the gardening workshop is one of the parks and recreation department’s well-attended and well-received events.

The next gardening workshop will take place March 28, exploring Composting and Compost Use with master gardener Kathy Klein, who will explain what it is and how to make and use it.

Another event will take place April 4 with master gardener Jane Irvin-Klotz, who will explain Herb Gardening, where to plant them, what to grow and its uses.

The workshops take place at 7 p.m. at the Lansdale Parks and Recreation, located at 660 Lansdale Ave.

Interested participants of the gardening workshop are encouraged to pre-register with the Lansdale Parks and Recreation Department, however, ‘drop-ins’ are also welcomed.
