Lansdale Runner Takes Second in NJ 5K
Fifth annual Polar Bear 5K Run/Walk for Autism brings in 2,100 runners and walkers for charity.
It may seem a little brisk for an outdoor race, but the winter weather did not stop one Lansdale man. He took first place in the 2012 race, but falling behind by just 18 seconds, he took a second place title this time around.
According to CompuScore.com, Kevin Donnelly, 24, of Lansdale, Pa., placed second in this Fifth Annual Polar Bear 5K Run/Walk for Autism, sponsored by Mike’s Seafood in Sea Isle City, N.J. Donnelly ran the 5K in 15:56 this year.
The race was held on Feb. 17, offering local runners and walkers a chance to support a good cause and stay fit through the winter months.

"One in 88 individuals is diagnosed with autism, making it more common than pediatric cancer, diabetes, and AIDS combined," said the race's website. "It is four times more likely to strike boys than girls and typically lasts throughout a person's lifetime."
The race aims to increase awareness and raise funds for research. It was started in 2009 by Sea Isle City resident Mike Monichetti. In the non-profit's very first race, over 500 racers came out and donated $11,000. The following year, the racers doubled and the funds tripled.Â

"Autism impairs a person's ability to communicate and relate to others," said the race site. "Symptoms can range from very mild to quite severe. The Polar Bear Walk/Run will generate funds for autism research, awareness, advocacy and family services."
