Latest Round Of PA Restaurant Closures: Enforcement Continues

PENNSYLVANIA — Enforcement of restaurants in violation of COVID-19 protocols continues in Pennsylvania, but the number of new establishments willing to stand in open defiance seems to be diminishing.

Just three restaurants were ordered to be shut down by the Department of Agriculture's Bureau of Food Safety over the most recent enforcement period, covering the week from Jan. 25 to Jan. 31.

That's tied for the the smallest number of restaurants shut down in a single week since mid-December. Just three restaurants were shut down the previous week, as well, following several weeks of anywhere from over a dozen to up to 40 shut downs being announced.

The recently shut down restaurants included:

• Douglassville Hotel, Berks County
• VFW #7812, Westmoreland County
• Agape Cafe and Grille, Lancaster County

A total of 138 restaurants have now been ordered to shut down, including at least 16 for the second time. A total of 154 closure orders have been issued since Dec. 14.

The overall number of complaints has also decreased, as the department received just 170 COVID-19 related complaints during that time.

Restaurants are only ordered to close when they openly refuse to adhere to guidelines and make changes after being confronted by an inspector.

"The Bureau of Food Safety operates with an education-first model, and always works to educate and correct issues on-site before taking official action," according to a Department of Agriculture release.

The strictest mitigation measures, which prohibited indoor dining, expired back on Jan. 4.

A full list of all restaurants ordered closed by the state due to COVID-19 violations, is included below, by county. A few of these restaurants had already appeared on previous shut-down lists, but were ordered to shut down a second time due to repeated violations after reopening. The list covers closures ordered since Dec. 14:
