Montco Community College Wins Esports League Championship

Montgomery County Community College battled four-year universities from across the nation to take home the coveted title.

BLUE BELL, PA — It did not take long for Montgomery County Community College's esports program to deliver the school a championship.

A year after the program launched, the Mustangs have won the College Aces Series Super Smash Brothers Ultimate tournament, defeating Western Colorado in the semi-finals and Widener University in the finals.

“I’m really proud of the effort and dedication our student-athletes and coaches have put forward," Athletics Director Kelly Dunbar said in a statement.

The team posted a 9-2 record during the regular season and secured the number one seed heading into the playoffs. Winning the championship earned them a $3,000 prize.

“We saw character development among the students themselves in real life, but also literal character development in the game,” Mustangs Assistant Coach of Esports Pirin Sriweawnetr said in a statement. "Literal and metaphorical development."

Dunbar added that the college would look to expand its team, with future roster options for games like "Hearthstone."
