Evans Elementary School Kindergarteners Learn About Brain Safety

Evans Elementary School students learn every day how to exercise their brains, but on March 13, the students learned how to protect their brains through a safety program called “BrainMinders.”

Presented by Pilot International Foundation, a worldwide service organization, “BrainMinders” is designed to help prevent brain injuries. Presenters Trudy Houck and Phyllis Snyder visited kindergarten classes to teach students about their brains and how they work. They also taught students the importance of various safety measures, such as wearing helmets, sitting in car and booster seats, wearing seatbelts, playing safely on playgrounds and looking both ways before crossing the street.

The program was an interactive one, featuring songs, stuffed animals and take home coloring books to reinforce the lessons learned.

“It’s important to help students learn and practice safe behaviors from a very young age, and we feel that the ‘BrainMinders’ program served that purpose,” Evans Elementary School Nurse Laura McNeil Murphy said. “The students enjoyed the interactive presentation and were able to share what they learned with their families at home.
