Java's Brewin' Hosts Local Singer-Songwriter

A Collegeville middle-schooler gave a solo performance on Friday night.

13-year-old Emma Cullen, a Perkiomen Valley Middle School East student, gave a live performance on Friday evening for a small crowd of mostly friends and family at Java's Brewin', a Limerick coffee shop.

Cullen recently released a six-song, self-titled EP. All six are songs that Cullen wrote.

Cullen said she has been writing for a few years, and playing guitar for longer. Given Cullen's age, it's probably not surprising that her biggest influence is country superstar Taylor Swift.

"She's why I started playing guitar," Cullen said.

Cullen's songs reflect her experiences, she said, and her style is country-pop. However, she said, when she plays live, she feels that her performances have a more indie-artist feel.

"I love playing music," Cullen said. "I hope people can see that when I play."
