Limerick Outage Fuels Local Economy

More than 2,000 highly trained technical workers are in the area to support Limerick Generating Station’s Unit 2 refueling outage that began shortly after midnight last night. Scheduled outages allow workers to perform detailed inspections, equipment upgrades and maintenance work that cannot be completed while the units are operating.

“Our business sees a positive boost from Limericks’ refueling outages,” said John Cutillo, Owner of Cutillo’s Restaurant in Sanatoga.  “The local business community benefits from the additional workers who need local accommodations and purchase goods, services and meals throughout the region.”

Limerick has two reactors, each of which is refueled once every two years. One-third of Unit 2’s fuel will be replaced and comprehensive maintenance and testing activities will be performed.

“The safe and reliable operation of Limerick Generating Station is always our top priority,” said Tom Dougherty, Limerick’s Site Vice President. “Refueling outages are critical to assuring plant safety and long-term equipment reliability.”

Limerick Unit 1 will continue to generate electricity during the Unit 2 outage.  Limerick Generating Station is located approximately 21 miles northwest of Philadelphia.  With both units at full power, the site can produce enough carbon-free electricity for two million homes.
