Limerick Township Trail Projects Get Boost From Montco Program

LIMERICK TOWNSHIP, PA — Limerick Township on Monday announced it is receiving another grant to complete another section of its planned trail system, this time from Montgomery County.

The Township is a recipient of a $60,000 MontCo 2040 Implementation Grant for the completion of a connecting segment of trail along the PECO right-of-way that will extend the trail from Limerick Center Road to the existing trailhead near Reed Road.

The Montco 2040 Implementation Grant Program was established in 2016 to help municipalities make improvements that support the county's comprehensive plan, particularly the plan's themes of Connected Communities, Sustainable Places, and Vibrant Economy.

Limerick Township said it has also begun construction of a second segment of trail between S. Limerick Road and Royersford Road. The township said that after these two trail segments are complete, they will provide 2.4 miles of multi-use, ADA-compliant trail between Limerick Center Road to Royersford Road.

The township's long-range plan is to create trail connections to the Freedom Valley YMCA trail network from Limerick Community Park and into neighboring townships, with ultimate connections to the Perkiomen and the Schuylkill River Regional Trails.

The township has had success in obtaining state grants for these community improvements. In September 2020 Limerick Township garnered a $225,000 Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources grant for improvements towards the Limerick Community Park. In 2019, the township received $200,000 from the DCNR for the project.
