Penn Relays Get Underway for Local Track Teams

The annual track meet is the largest in the U.S. and the largest relay race meet in the world.

Spring-Ford and Pope John Paul II's track teams are on the schedule for the 2013 Penn Relays which began Thursday. 

Pope John Paul II High School

According to the Penn Relays website, the Pope John Paul II girls team has already competed on Thursday in the High School Girls 4x100 Small Schools division.

The PJPII team ran a 52.97 race and placed 157th out of 357 teams. PJP's ranking and the top spot, a team from Jamaica who set the race record at 45.52, are separated by only 7 seconds.

In Thursday afternoon competition in the Girls 4x400 race, PJP placed seventh with a time of 4:18.45.

The PJPII High School Boys placed 177th out of 296 teams, with a time of 46.22 in the 4x100 in the Small Schools division on Friday.

PJPII's upcoming team race is the High School Boys' 4x400 in the Suburban A & B division on Saturday.

PJPII also has an individual athlete, Devon Player, who competed in the High School Girls Javelin Throw contest on Thursday. Player placed eighth with a throw of 39.90 meters.

Spring-Ford High School

The Spring-Ford teams competed Thursday in the High School Girls 4x100 in the Large Schools division and the High School Girls 4x400 in the Suburban A division. On Friday, the boys ran in the High School Boys 4x100 in the Large Schools division. Finally, on Saturday, the boys compete in the 4x400 in the Suburban A division. 

Spring-Ford placed 151st out of 257 teams in the 4x100 on Thursday afternoon, coming in with a time of 52.26. Their time is only six seconds behind the top team, a high school from Jamaica, who placed first with a time of 45.41.

Spring-Ford also placed sixth in the High School Girls 4x400, with a time of 4:15.23.

In the Boys 4x100, the team placed 74th of 273 teams, with a time of 44.15. The fastest time in that race was 41.08, just three seconds faster. 

Sacred Heart and St. Eleanor CYO

Teams from two other area Catholic schools competed on Friday. 

Sacred Heart's senior girls placed second in the 4x100 with a time of 53.44.

St. Eleanor's junior boys placed sixth in their 4x100 race with a time of 58.07.

St Eleanor's senior boys placed third in their 4x100 with a time of 48.67.
