Seatbelt Safety Spotlighted for Spring City Students

Third- and fourth-grade students at Spring City Elementary Hybrid Learning School got a "crash" course in seatbelt safety from a Pennyslvania state trooper.

Students in three Spring City Elementary classrooms heard a presentation on seatbelt safety from Pennsylvania State Trooper Morgan Crummy on Thursday, March 14.

Crummy, who works out of the Skippack barracks, gave an engaging talk on why seatbelts are so important for all ages, from infants to adults.

Kids eagerly raised their hands when Crummy asked for volunteers. A few hands went down when Crummy said, "You don't know what you're volunteering for - it could be pushups! Or laps around the school!"

However, it wasn't either of those - it was volunteering to play driver and passengers in a car. Students represented drivers and passengers on a trip to somewhere "two hours away."

Popular picks for trips were New York City, the Philadelphia Zoo, and Hershey Park.

Crummy also explained how airbags and seatbelts work in concert in a crash, and talked about how many accidents happen close to home.

"Why do you think that is?" Crummy asked her audiences.

"Because they want to get home," one student said. "They're thinking about dinner," another one told Crummy.

The takeaway for the kids was a reminder that they can demonstrate good habits by using seatbelts and politely asking others to do so.

"You can be a good example," Crummy told them.
