The Lifetime Romance That Began At A Gulf Gas Station

"He asked me out while he was pumping the gas for me and took me bowling."

For this month's Love In A Small Town feature, we asked Patch readers to tell us the story behind their romantic chance encounters. This is Margie McCurdy's story:

In my early 20s I worked with a woman whose husband co-owned the Gulf gas station in Feasterville. My car was always having problems and I took it to her husband’s Gulf station to have the latest problem fixed. I dropped it off with a cute mechanic who worked there and told him to call me if it was going to cost more than $200.

When I returned that day after work to get the car, I asked how much I owed and he said, ‘Five thirty five.’ I went ballistic, screaming that I told him to call me if it was over $200. He let me rant and rave for five minutes and then said, ‘$5.35. It needed a quart of oil.’

I felt like a jerk, but I was also mad that he let me think the price was so high. I stormed out but he was so darn cute I went back to get gas a few days later. He asked me out while he was pumping the gas for me and took me bowling.

Three days later he proposed! I made him wait a day but knew he was the guy for me, and the next day (April 26) I told him I’d marry him. We got engaged on July 26, my 21st birthday, and were married on September 26 the following year. We will celebrate our 37th anniversary this year!
