Delco Hosting Earth Tree Event Saturday In Ridley Township

The event will see Kentucky coffee, honey locust, American elm, and American hackberry trees planted in Catania Park Saturday morning.

RIDLEY TOWNSHIP, PA — Delaware County is hosting an Earth Day celebration this weekend in Ridley Township.

The Delaware County Department of Parks & Recreation, in partnership with the Pennsylvania Horticulture Society, announced a tree planting event to take place at 9 a.m. Saturday in Ridley Township's Catania Park.

"Fifteen new trees will be planted around the athletic field, and the planting work will be done by volunteers from the Ridley Athletic Club, local Tree Tenders, and students from Penncrest High School," Parks & Recreation Director Marc Manfre said.

The trees were provided by the Pennsylvania Horticulture Society and include four deciduous native species: Kentucky coffeetree, honey locust, American elm and American hackberry trees. Trees are essential to a healthy environment as they provide shade, soak up stormwater, clean the air, and support wildlife.

In addition to the tree planting event on Saturday morning, Catania Park is also hosting the Yard Tree Giveaway sponsored by Delaware County Conservation District, Friends of Heinz Refuge, Natural Lands, and the Arbor Day Foundation.
