Huge Blaze Destroys Historic Delaware County Church

Third Presbyterian Church was established in 1872 and was added to the National Register of Historic Places​ in November 2019.​

CHESTER, PA — A historic church in Delaware County was engulfed in flames Thursday morning, destroying the church, according to fire officials.

The Chester Bureau of Fire said at about 2 a.m., firefighters were called to the Third Presbyterian Church at 420 E. 9th St. in Chester.

Officials said the fire reached five alarms and numerous fire companies from the county responded to battle the blaze.

After several hours, crews got the fire under control, but as of about 10:30 a.m. crews were still on scene controlling hot spots.

The church's steeple collapsed during the blaze, but its facade remains intact.

No one was hurt, according to the fire bureau.
