Special Election For Pat Meehan's Seat Set For Nov 6, Wolf Says

Republican Pat Meehan announced his resignation last week, and now a date has been set to fill his vacated 7th Congressional District seat.

A date has been set for the special election of the 7th Pennsylvania Congressional District seat that was recently vacated by Republican Pat Meehan, according to Gov. Tom Wolf's office.

Wolf's office said the special election will be held in conjunction with the general election on Tuesday, November 6.

"Given the calendar and timing of these announcements, it makes the most fiscal and practical sense for our county elections office to schedule these special elections on the same day as the November general election," Wolf said in the announcement.

Meehan announced his resignation from the 7th District seat on Friday, April 27. The resignation comes months after the four-term Republican said he is not seeking reelection this year.

All this stems from allegations of sexual misconduct with a female staffer and taxpayer funds used to settle that claim. Additionally, Meehan's district, often cited as the nation's worst case of gerrymandering, will have new lines after the Pennsylvania Supreme Court ruled the current congressional district map unconstitutional.

The 7th District covers parts of Delaware, Montgomery, Chester, Berks, and Lancaster counties.

The governor plans to handle any upcoming congressional retirements in the same manner unless they occur within 60 days of the general election, according to Wolf's announcement.
