Moon Area To Honor Late AD William 'Rip' Scherer
The field at Tiger Stadium will be named after the legendary athletic director and football coach.

MOON TOWNSHIP, PA - Six years after his death, the Moon Area School District will honor former athletic director William “Rip” Scherer by naming the Tiger Stadium playing field after him. The dedication will occur during halftime of the Tigers’ Sept. 18 football game against Baldwin.
Scherer served as Moon athletic director from 1969 to 1991 and also was the school’s varsity football coach from 1969 to 1991.
He is credited for expanding the athletic opportunities at Moon Area by adding girls’ basketball, softball, tennis, gymnastics, field hockey, track, bowling, volleyball, soccer, and cross country teams. These sports were added even thought Title IX guidelines were not yet in place.

Scherer also added boys’ wrestling, cross country, bowling, and soccer programs to the district.
Additionally, Scherer established and led program such as the district drung and alcohol program, adult education classes, summer recreation programs and the Moon-Crescent Athletic Association.
